A Step-By-Step Guide to Making a DIY Paper Rose

You might have seen tutorials before, maybe even tried your hand at it. But trust me, this DIY paper rose method is a game changer. So let’s get started.

Choose Your Paper

The key to making realistic and elegant paper roses lies in selecting the right type of paper. Ice silver, rose quartz, and red lacquer will make some classic white, pink, and red roses, but I can imagine some beautiful yellow roses using the same metallic paper used in Moss or Fairway.

The slight shimmer of metallic paper also adds a soft, luminous quality, enhancing each petal’s delicate nature.

I suggest you use a letter or text-weight paper, as card stock or even scrapbook paper does not curl as smoothly. You can find all of the papers below, or you can browse to pick your own colors!

Create Petal Templates

Draw petal shapes on your paper. You will need three different sizes:

  • Large petals (6 pieces): these will be the outer petals.
  • Medium petals (6 pieces): these make up the middle layer.
  • Small petals( 4 pieces): these form the rosebud.

Cut them carefully. To add a personal, artistic flair, you can either trace a template for precision or sketch the petals freehand.

Shape the Petals

To make your DIY paper rose look more realistic, curl the edges of each petal using a pencil or by gently rolling them with your fingers. This adds dimension and makes them look natural.

Make the Center Bud

Take one small petal, roll it tightly to form the center of your rose, and glue it in place. Then, wrap the remaining petals around it. Build the rose layer by layer and secure each one with glue.

Try blending different shades of paper in one rose for an added artistic look. Use a gradient effect, where the inner petals are a deeper shade and outer petals are lighter. Doing this allows you to create a visually stunning bloom that appears almost real.

Attach the Stem

Take a piece of floral wire or a wooden stick and attach it to the base of your rose with hot glue. You can also use floral tape to wrap the wire stem, giving it a finished look that closely resembles the real thing.

The wire stem makes the rose very useful as you can add it to a bouquet or trim and curl the wire end. If you want to make a rose without the stem, you can refer to my How to Make a Paper Rose video.

Add Fragrance for a Realistic Touch

Want your DIY rose paper to smell like real roses? Lightly spray perfume or add a drop of rose essential oil to the petals for a natural scent.

Conclusion

Making a DIY paper rose is not just about crafting. It’s about creating something beautiful and meaningful. Whether you are making them for yourself or gifting them to a loved one, each rose is a unique piece of art.
